Cytology reveals a different degree of erythroid maturity depending on the organs: early erythroblasts predominate in the placenta; late erythroblasts (small, deeply basophilic, arrows in E) are numerous in the yolk sac; fetal liver displays mainly erythrocytes expelling their nucleus (arrows in F).
