The skin is peeled off to allow access to the muscle cells. Muscle voltage responses are evoked by mechanosensory stimulation delivered by a puff of water and are measured with a patch electrode. Wild-type siblings (B) and acc (D) display similar rhythmic depolarizations (fictive swimming), whereas strychnine-treated wild-type siblings (C) respond with a non-rhythmic, shorter depolarization.
