Mutant skin was covered by pigmented dots (arrows) and white granules. Eyes were open and external ears were poorly developed. (C,D) Scanning electron microscopic analysis of the skin of a Catnb{Delta}ex3K14/+ mutant embryo (D) and its control littermate (C) at E14.5 revealed the random and dense pattern of epithelial evaginations on the surface of the mutant skin when compared with the regular array of hair placodes in the control embryo.
