(D-F) In Eya1–/– embryos, there were more apoptotic cells in the proximal region of the 1st and 2nd arches (arrows in D,E, other data not shown). No significant changes of apoptotic cells were observed either in the neural crest mesenchyme or the pouch endoderm in the 3rd and 4th pharyngeal regions (E,F and other data not shown). Note that numerous apoptotic cells were detected in the surface ectoderm (se) of the 3rd (reflexed arrows in E,F) and 4th pharyngeal regions (data not shown).
