revealed by immunostaining of coronal telencephalic sections taken from 22 and
24 somite embryos, Shh (red) is normally expressed nested within the
Nkx2.1-positive domain (green) in the subpallium (A). Expression of Shh is lost
at early stages in the subpallium of Nkx2.1–/–mutant mice (B). Note the Nkx2.1 antibody still recognizes a very low
level of mutant protein in the Nkx2.1–/–mutant
subpallium (faint green). Expression of Shh in the subpallium is unaffected in Sey/Sey mutant mice lacking Pax6, as shown in coronal
