Clones of ectopic Fng-expressing cells (marked by nuclear GFP, green) in the V
compartment are responsive to Dl, owing to modification of Notch by the ectopic
activity of Fng; cells within the clone are induced to express Cut (red,
appears as yellow) by Dl expressed by adjacent wild-type cells. Notch
activation within the Fng-expressing cells also drives Wg and Ser expression,
creating a feedback loop that leads to the activation of Cut (red) in the
surrounding wild-type cells. (B) Clones of lqf– cells
that ectopically express Fng (marked by nuclear GFP, green). Fng-expressing
cells along the clone border are induced to express Cut (red, appears as
yellow) by Dl expressed by the surrounding wild-type cells. However, these
cells fail to induce Cut in adjacent wild-type cells, indicating that they
cannot signal back to activate Notch across the clone border (in contrast to
the situation in A).
