Fig. S1. Similar patterns of melanophore stripes in early larvae of Danio species and their relatives. Despite the diversity of adult pigment patterns (see Fig. 1), early larvae from different species are virtually indistinguishable. Larvae are 4-7 dpf except for D. kyathit (2 dpf).
Movie 1. In D. rerio, melanophores comprising the adult ventral stripe ‘disappear’ in the movie because they have differentiated from latent precursors during metamorphosis. Melanophores in the middle of the flank at the end of the movie (beginning of metamorphosis) reside deep within the fish and do not contribute to the pigment pattern on the flank.
Movie 2. In D. nigrofasciatus, some melanophores ‘disappear’ because they are derived from latent precursors, but many can be followed back to positions within the early larval stripe along the ventral aspect of the myotome. Although some of the repositioning of early larval melanophores results from passive movements due to growth of the flank, active movements are involved as well (see Fig. 4).
Movies 1, 2. Time-lapse animations reveal the different origins of adult melanophores and the different modes of pigment pattern metamorphosis in D. rerio and D. nigrofasciatus. Movies are compiled from sequential images of individual, representative larvae taken from the onset of pigment pattern metamorphosis through adult pigment pattern development (corresponding to stages shown in Fig. 6). Movies focus on the adult ventral melanophore stripe. Although the fish grow considerably, all images are rescaled so that only changes in melanophore numbers and locations are evident. To illustrate the different origins of adult melanophores in D. rerio and D. nigrofasciatus, the movies begin shortly after the juvenile pigment pattern has formed then proceed in reverse to the early larval pigment pattern; thus, newly metamorphic melanophores are seen to ‘disappear’ in the movies.
