Supplemental Figure 1

Fig. S1. lacZ expression
patterns directed by various transgenic constructs in stage 14 or later embryos
(during maintenance phase). (A) The 13.8Ecl construct that covers
the whole iab-5 domain. lacZ is expressed at high level in PS10
and PS12. The arrows indicate the expression in the CNS (the shift occurs
relative to the epidermis staining because of the contraction of the CNS that
begins at that stage). Except for lacZ expression in
the CNS, the expression pattern directed by the 13.8Ecl fragment is identical
to the pattern directed by the IAB5 construct alone (Busturia and Bienz, 1993).
(B) The maintenance in the epidermis of the PS11 anterior border
of lacZ expression directed by the 2.8XN fragment (IAB6),
indicative of the existence of a ME in the construct. (C,D) The
tissue-specific expression pattern in the visceral mesoderm (VM) directed by
the 4.4E and 4.4H fragments respectively. (E) In addition
to an expression pattern in the VM, fragment 11X directs also expression in
lateral stripes of the epidermis in each parasegment and in cells that
presumably form the tracheal placodes. (F) 3.6XH that
contains the IAB7b initiator directs at stage 16 a tissue-specific expression
pattern in the CNS and the tracheal placodes (see Barges et al., 2000).
