Figure 1

Fig. 1. Novel Hairy and E(spl) related bHLH-O proteins in Xenopus and zebrafish are closely related to mammalian Hes2 proteins. (A) Alignment of vertebrate Hes2 proteins carried out using ClustalW (Thompson et al., 1994). Amino acid conservation (using BLOSUM similarity score matrix, max. diversity=30) is depicted as follows: dark grey, identical; light grey, strongly similar; grey letters, weakly similar; dashes, gaps. (B) Sequence similarities between XHes2 and other vertebrate bHLH-O proteins. The phylogenetic tree is based on the comparison of full-length protein sequences. GenBank Accession Numbers are Xl.Hes2 (DQ156231), Xt.Hes2 (DT430701), Hs.Hes2 (XP_375684), Mm.Hes2 (NP_032262), Br.Hes2 (CK694128), Xl.Hairy1 (BC070988), Xl.Hairy2b (AF383160), Xl.ESR1 (AF383157), Xl.ESR5 (AF137072), Xl.HR1 (AB071432), Xl.Hes6 (BJ624139), Xl.HRT1 (AJ401271). Abbreviations: aa, amino acids; Br., Brachydanio rerio; Hs., Homo sapiens; Mm., Mus musculus; Xl., Xenopus laevis; Xt., Xenopus tropicalis.
