Fig. S1. Effects of TGFβ1 on biliary cell differentiation. Distal liver fragments of the 12.5-day liver were cultured for 5 days in the presence or absence of TGFβ1 (200 pg/ml), and histologically and histochemically analyzed for expression of bile duct-type cytokeratin. Although large hepatocytes are observed, biliary cell differentiation does not occur in either the wild-type (A-D) or knockout (E-H) liver explants in the presence (C,D,G,H) or absence (A,B,E,F) of TGFβ1. Bile duct-type cytokeratin is also expressed in large hepatocytes in vitro. Scale bar: 50 μm.
