(A,B) In wildtype (wt), Ato is expressed in the precursors of the antennal dorsal organ (Dd9,11,12,13) positioned within the antennal appendage, and, by that stage, in Dv1, a precursor of the hypopharyngeal-/latero-hypopharyngeal organ (Urbach et al., 2003). (C,D) In vnd mutants (vnd-), Ato is normal in precursors of the dorsal organ, but often missing at the position of Dv1 and in its proneural cluster (25%, n=18). (D) In the individual shown, Ato is found in Dv1 on the left side (black arrowhead), but absent on the right side (white arrowhead). Orientation and abbreviations are as in former figures.
