Fig. S1. The 641 bp 3′ half of the intron of the Paracentrotus lividus nodal gene contains 12 putative Smad sites. The positions of 11 of these Smad sites that were mutated for analysis are depicted. The A-module (shaded in gray) contains five Smad sites and the Restriction module (referred to as the R2-module in the text and consisting of the rest of the sequence) contains six Smad sites. One site (S1), located just 5′ of this region, was also mutated, although its sequence was not conserved in the other species.
