Fig. S1. Somitic ectoderm does not give rise to lymph heart tissue. Ectoderm overlying newly formed somites 34-38 was homotopically transplanted at E4 from a GFP transgenic chick (under β-actin promoter; courtesy of Dr Helen Sang, Roslin Institute, UK) into a wild-type host. A transverse paraffin section through the caudal part of the lymph heart (asterisk) 6 days later shows the only immunohistochemical GFP localization in ectoderm (arrow), with no contribution to the underlying tissues.
