  Fig. S1. Grafted cells are actively involved in the regenerative process. (A) In the homotopic tibial transplantation at post-surgical day 21, GFP- staining is found in osteocytes (red arrows) and in a subset of osteoblast (yellow arrows). (B) Osteoclastic remodeling is detectable by TRAP-staining throughout the regenerate. (C) Angiogenesis in the mandibular heterotopic graft site is limited to the fibrous encapsulation and does not penetrate the cartilage condensation. (D) At post-surgical day 15, the cartilage undergoes endochondral ossification (E) and only a few cells remain GFP-positive. (F) Osteoclastic remodeling is occurring throughout the graft site.
