About the Cover
Cover: Leaves develop from founder cells recruited from shoot meristems. Genetic analyses revealed that the narrow sheath genes are required to initialize a subset of founder cells that form a lateral domain in maize leaves. This composite image portrays accumulation of ns transcripts (purple) in two foci within the maize shoot meristem, corresponding to the points from where founder cell recruitment ensues.
