Cover: A 4.5 day mouse blastocyst. The transcription factor Oct4 (orange) is detectable in nuclei of the epiblast, the embryonic progenitors, but is excluded from the extra-embryonic lineages: trophectoderm (blue) and primitive endoderm (all nuclei labeled in green).The transcription factor Cdx2 is required for the repression of Oct4 in the trophectoderm and for the maintenance of this lineage.
